Settling in & cultural primer

Groceries, apps, friends, public holidays and the unwritten rules — how to feel at home faster.

Overview

Dubai is futuristic, diverse, safe and full of opportunity — but settling in takes a bit of local knowledge. The day-to-day stuff (which supermarket maps to which UK chain, which apps run your bills) is what makes the city feel like home.

It's also a Muslim country with clear cultural norms. Modest dress in government buildings and mosques, zero tolerance for drugs, alcohol licensed for non-Muslims over 21, and care on social media. Once you know the rules, life feels remarkably safe and predictable.
