Budgeting & cost of living

Real monthly costs for singles and families, salary expectations, hidden setup fees, and the small line items that add up fast.

Overview

Salaries are quoted gross — there's no income tax — but the city rewards people who negotiate housing, transport, schooling and insurance allowances upfront. You only get one shot at that conversation.

Lifestyle drives the spread. A single in JVC on the metro can live well on AED 10–15k a month; a family in Dubai Hills with international school fees will run 5–10x that. The budget tool models both ends.

Key steps
01
Map your fixed monthly burn
Rent, utilities (DEWA + cooling), internet, mobile, groceries, transport, insurance. Single: AED 8–14k. Family of four: AED 25–55k+.
02
Plan setup capital
Security deposit (5% unfurnished / 10% furnished), agency fee (5% + VAT), DEWA deposit, Ejari, visa fees, school deposits, furniture (AED 15–30k+ unfurnished).
03
Negotiate the offer, not the salary
Housing allowance, transport, education benefits, health insurance, relocation allowance. Most companies have flex on the package.
04
Build a 3–6 month buffer
Cover deposits, school fees and gaps while your visa, Emirates ID and banking activate.

Pro tips
School fees are the single biggest family expense — apply 6–12 months early to secure places.
Negotiate the number of rent cheques as well as the price. Fewer cheques (1–2 vs 4–6) often unlocks a discount.
Use Wise, Revolut or XE for international transfers instead of bank wires.
Save at least 20% of income — the tax-free salary illusion catches people who don't.
