Overview
UAE residency is linked to sponsorship: an employer, your own company, a freelance permit, or a self-sponsored route like the Golden or Remote Work Visa. Pick the route first — the rest of the move flows from it.
Employer sponsorship is the most common route — most employers pay for the visa, medical test, Emirates ID and residency stamping upfront. If your employment ends, the visa is cancelled and you typically have a 30-day grace period to switch sponsor, apply for a new visa, or leave the country.
Dubai's systems are efficient when paperwork is in order. Most documents need to be originals, attested (legally verified) and translated if not in English or Arabic. Get attestation done in your home country if you can — it speeds everything up later.

Employment visa
Employer sponsors and usually covers medical, Emirates ID and stamping. Typical 3–4 weeks timeline if documents are in order. If employment ends, expect a 30-day grace period to switch sponsor or exit — after which overstaying costs AED 50 / day.

Investor / partner visa
Through a UAE company (Free Zone or LLC). Min. investment ~AED 72,000+. Valid 2–3 years, renewable, includes family sponsorship. Free Zone and LLC setup costs are comparable but rules and pricing vary by Free Zone; licence renews yearly (with or without a physical office).

Freelance visa
Independent professionals. Requires portfolio and client proof. 1–2 years, renewable. Lets you invoice multiple clients legally.

Family sponsorship
Sponsor spouse/children if you earn AED 4,000+ (or AED 3,000 + accommodation), as of our last review. Parents need AED 20,000+ or proof of sole caregiving.

Golden Visa
5 or 10 years, self-sponsored. There is no salary that qualifies you on its own — it is category-based, and ICP assesses the application. The routes: Property investors — AED 2M+ in UAE real estate; Public investors — AED 2M+ in an accredited UAE investment fund; Entrepreneurs — a UAE SME with AED 1M+ annual revenue, or incubator approval; Skilled professionals — an attested UAE contract at MOHRE occupational level 1 or 2, a bachelor's degree, and AED 30,000+/month; Specialised talents — doctors, scientists, inventors, creatives and athletes, each needing an endorsement from the body that governs their field; Outstanding students and graduates — top school performers, or a GPA of 3.5+ from an accredited university. Two of those get conflated, and it matters which one you are on. Skilled professionals is an objective test you can check yourself: AED 30,000 / month plus an attested UAE contract, a first- or second-level MOHRE occupational classification and an attested bachelor's degree — no nomination, no endorsement, though licensed professions also need their UAE practising licence. Specialised talents is the route where an endorsement IS the test: a Ministry of Health approval for a doctor, an Emirates Council of Scientists recommendation for a scientist, a Department of Culture and Arts letter for a creative. If you are a salaried professional on AED 30,000+, the first one is yours to check — do not rule yourself out on a condition that belongs to the second. Remote Work Visa
For people employed by a foreign company who want to live in Dubai while working remotely — a fit for digital nomads and remote professionals not seeking local UAE employment.

Retirement visa
From age 55, renewable 5-year residency. Eligibility: AED 1M in property or savings, or monthly income of AED 20,000. Includes family sponsorship.

Tourist visa first
UK citizens get 90 days visa-on-arrival, free of charge. You cannot legally work on it — if you land an offer, you either exit and re-enter on the employment visa or change status in-country. Common route for job-seekers — plan the switch before the 90 days run out.

Get through biometrics and the Emirates ID
Processing starts alongside the residency visa, and biometrics have to be done in person at an authorised centre. On an employment visa the employer books that appointment and the medical screening as part of the process. On a freelance or self-sponsored visa, booking it is yours to do — and nothing else moves until the card exists.

Install the government apps first week
Most official business here is digital-first. ICP for visas, Emirates ID and status checks; UAE PASS as the single digital identity that logs you in and signs documents; DubaiNow for bills and traffic fines; MOHRE for labour contracts and work permits if you're employed. They replace an enormous number of trips to service centres.

Roughly 3–4 weeks end to end, if every document is in order. Missing or unattested paperwork is the usual reason it runs longer. Plan flights and tenancy start dates against the Emirates ID, not the entry permit — it is the step that gates banking, tenancy and customs clearance.

If you've lost key documents
Lost degree certificate — contact your university registrar for a replacement or certified transcripts; many will assist with the attestation process directly.
University closed or merged — your home-country Ministry of Education archives can usually verify qualifications. Some employers will accept an experience letter at their discretion.
Lost UK birth or marriage certificate — order official copies from the General Register Office (GRO) before starting attestation. Attestation only accepts originals or certified duplicates.
Pro tips
Attestation runs in a fixed order, and it is far faster from home: the issuing authority, then your country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the UAE Embassy there. Once you land, MOFAIC stamps them for UAE recognition. Doing this after arrival is possible and slow.
Anything not in English or Arabic needs an official translation before it can be attested. Ask your embassy which translators they accept rather than guessing.
A standard employment visa runs two to three years, after which the employer must renew or cancel it. Diarise the date — it is your responsibility as much as theirs.
A Free Zone licence and visa together usually take up to a month. Licences renew annually, and most Free Zones offer packages with or without a physical office.
For Golden Visa, go directly to an Amer Center instead of using agencies — usually cheaper.
Always request written confirmation when a visa is cancelled and check status via the ICP app.
If your name varies across documents, get an affidavit of name declaration from your embassy before submitting.
Opening a bank account, signing a tenancy or clearing pet/shipment customs all require a valid Emirates ID — entry timing has real financial consequences.
Visa extensions are possible in-country via ICP or GDRFA — check the current process before your entry permit expires.
Most supporting documents must be originals — marriage certificate, title deed, business licence and children's passports won't be accepted as copies for attestation or sponsorship.
Check whether your employer covers family sponsorship fees as well as your own visa — many do, and it's worth asking before you pay upfront.
Health screening & insurance
Health insurance is a legal requirement in Dubai — you can't finalise residency without it. Employer plans vary widely: confirm dependent coverage and outpatient limits before signing. Enhanced family policies often add maternity, dental and paediatric cover, which can matter more than the headline premium.

Local laws to know early
Dubai is welcoming but a few local expectations catch newcomers out. Dress modestly in government buildings, malls and courtrooms — knees and shoulders covered is the safe default. Public conduct and social-media posts are taken seriously; avoid arguments in public, complaints about individuals or businesses online, and photographs of people without consent. Alcohol is legal for residents and tourists over 21 in licensed venues, but drinking or storing alcohol at home requires a personal liquor licence, which is free and quick to obtain.
